What Are Uterine Fibroids?

A fibroid is a non-cancerous growth of tissue that develops within the walls of the uterus. Left untreated, fibroids will typically continue to grow throughout the menstrual cycle and can lead to the following symptoms:

  • Heavy menstrual bleeding
  • Irregular bleeding
  • Pelvic pain and cramping
  • Pain during sexual intercourse
  • Frequent urination
  • Lower back pain

In most cases, uterine fibroids are asymptomatic and may be monitored through routine gynecological exams. However, fibroids that continue to grow and cause painful or discomforting symptoms may be safely and effectively treated with the MyoSure procedure.

What Does the MyoSure Procedure Involve?

MyoSure is a minimally invasive procedure that utilizes a camera-equipped instrument, known as a hysteroscope, to locate and remove fibroids from within the uterus. During the hysteroscopic procedure, our expert gynecologists pass the hysteroscope through the vagina and cervix and into the uterus.

Once inside the uterus, the side of the instrument is used to gently cut the fibroids into tiny pieces while leaving the uterine lining (endometrium) in tact. The removed fibroid tissue is then suctioned into the core of the device and the hysteroscope is removed from the uterus. Nothing is left in the body after this procedure. The MyoSure technique can be completed in 30 minutes under local or general anesthesia and is performed at the La Peer outpatient center in Beverly Hills.

Is MyoSure Right For Me?

The MyoSure procedure is an effective treatment for women with heavy periods or irregular menstrual bleeding due to benign fibroid growths within the uterus. Often, uterine fibroids do not cause any bothersome symptoms and may only require routine monitoring or hormonal medication.

Women who are experiencing heavy or long-lasting periods due to pelvic infection or non-benign conditions, such as cervical malignancies and endometrial cancer, are not candidates for the MyoSure procedure. Additionally, the MyoSure procedure is not recommended for women who are or may be pregnant. Our expert gynecologists can help determine if the MyoSure procedure is the right choice for you.
