Steven W. Meier, M.D. is a board-certified orthopedic surgeonspecializing in sports medicine including care of the shoulder and knee as well as the elbow, hip and ankle. He received his residency training at Northwestern University in Chicago after graduating with honors from Loyola University Medical School in Chicago. He then went on to complete a fellowship program in sports medicine and arthroscopic surgery at the University of California San Diego.

During his fellowship, Dr. Meier served on staff at the university and his responsibilities included supervising orthopedic care for the university athletic teams. He has continued to be involved with athletic medicine, functioning as team physician and consultant to high school, collegiate and professional athletic teams.

Whether working with recreational athletes, injured workers or any other individuals, Dr. Meier provides each patient with the quality of care given to professional athletes. When treating musculoskeletal conditions, Dr. Meier utilizes various therapeutic techniques which may include an exercise program, rehabilitation or minimally invasive surgery. When surgery is necessary, the most current and leading-edge technologies are employed which result in less postoperative pain and faster recovery. Dr. Meier takes the time to listen to each individual’s concerns and needs to formulate an individualized treatment program that is most compatible with their goals and aspirations.

Teaching and research are essential for staying at the forefront of this evolving medical specialty. Dr. Meier regularly presents original research, performs surgery internationally and teaches advanced arthroscopic procedures to surgeons all over the world in Europe, Asia, South America and Africa as well as throughout the United States. He has also published numerous articles in specialty textbooks and journals.

Since Dr. Meier is known to be a leading surgeon within his specialty, patients with difficult and complex joint disorders often seek him out including those who have had surgery elsewhere with unsatisfactory results. As a consequence, patients often travel from out-of-state and overseas to receive care by Dr. Meier.

Dr. Meier’s areas of focus involve shoulder, knee and athletic injuries and the surgical and non-surgical treatment of these conditions. His emphasis is on minimally-invasive arthroscopic surgery and he has a particular interest in all-arthroscopic repair for rotator cuff injury and shoulder instability as well as reconstructive cartilage and knee ligament surgery. His specialized training provides him with expertise in using state-of-the-art, arthroscopic techniques for treating problems of the shoulder, knee, elbow, hip and ankle.

Dr. Meier enjoys helping people from all walks of life return to their desired level of function. He has refined how to individualize and streamline medicine to meet the demands of high-performance individuals while providing the same level of progressive treatment to athletes and non-athletes alike.
