Dr. Tigran Garabekyan is a Board Certified Orthopedic Surgeon specializing in sports medicine and hip preservation, in addition to shoulder and knee joint preservation and joint replacement. Dr. Garabekyan is the founder and director of the Southern California Hip Institute, and will be sharing his expertise with La Peer Health Systems and the La Peer Surgery Center to treat orthopedic patients of all ages, including athletes.

Dr. Garabekyan received his Chemical Engineering degree from the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) and received his medical degree from the University of California at San Diego. Following his degree programs, Dr. Garabekyan went on to complete numerous continuing education programs, including an internship of General Surgery at the University of California at San Diego, and a residency of Orthopedic Surgery at Marshall University in Huntington, West Virginia. During his time there, Dr. Garabekyan played an important role in the shaping of the curriculum of the program and by acting as the Chief Resident for his graduating class. Upon graduating in the top 99% of his peer residents, Dr. Garabekyan was offered and accepted a position at Marshall Orthopedics as the Assistant Program Director in which he served for two and a half years. During this time, Dr. Garabekyan also served on multiple committees.

Following his time at Marshall Orthopedics, Dr. Garabekyan completed a fellowship of Hip Preservation at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. Dr. Garabekyan’s educational experiences have allowed him to work alongside some of the world’s best surgeons of cartilage and joint preservation.

After his fellowship in Colorado, Dr. Garabekyan moved back to his native city of Los Angeles, CA to further pursue his passion for education and providing top quality care in the field of orthopedics. In 2015, Dr. Garabekyan founded the Southern California Hip Institute, which specializes in treating pain, arthritis, cartilage, tendons, and other conditions of the hip, knee and shoulder.

Dr. Garabekyan’s special interests include the treatment of articular cartilage injuries, labral tears, osteitis pubis, femoroacetabular impingement, hip tendon injuries, osteoarthritis, and hip dysplasia, in which he provides a holistic approach through the combination of hip arthroscopy and realignment osteotomies of the pelvis and femur. The Southern California Hip Institute also specializes in offering minimally invasive hip and knee arthroscopic surgery, which can be performed as outpatient procedures, requiring only small incisions and minimal downtime for patients.

One of Dr. Garabekyan’s many talents is performing hip arthroscopic surgery without a perineal post, allowing him to perform simultaneous bilateral hip arthroscopy to reduce recovery for patients.

Dr. Garabekyan has received multiple awards throughout his career. In 2006, he received the honor of joining the Gold Humanism in Medicine Honor Society, and in 2009 received the Orthopedic Trauma Association Award for Excellence in Teaching.

Dr. Garabekyan has written and co-authored many online and in-print journal articles, and textbook chapters in orthopedic surgery. He has served as a prominent speaker at conferences nationally and worldwide presenting the results of his work and research.

Today, Dr. Garabekyan continues his industry-shaping work at the Southern California Hip Institute and as an affiliated surgeon at La Peer Health Systems in Los Angeles, providing the highest quality of care and cutting edge treatments for hip, knee and shoulder patients.
