Undergoing breast reconstruction surgery can be a very big decision in a woman’s life. It’s a decision that can be made with the help of an expert plastic surgeon.
Breast reconstruction surgery aims to rebuild a woman’s breast for several different reasons, be it a lumpectomy, mastectomy, or another disorder. At La Peer Health Systems, our plastic surgeons in Beverly Hills seek to provide only the best results to our patients by coming up with a procedure that exclusively meets their hopes and needs.
Generally speaking, two different procedures take place when a patient chooses to undergo breast reconstruction: breast reconstruction then nipple reconstruction.
Breast Reconstruction Procedure
Breast reconstruction procedures are highly individualized and customized treatments at La Peer because our doctors place a high importance of providing each patient with the best outcomes possible. In order to do so, the procedure must be personalized to each patient. This type of surgery is often performed on patients who have lost their breasts due to cancer and other disorders. However, a lot of our patients had a previously botched breast augmentation procedure elsewhere. This underscores the importance of choosing a knowledgeable and experienced plastic surgeon to perform your surgery.
The best candidates for breast and nipple reconstruction surgery are patients who have realistic outcomes and goals for restoring their breasts image. It also doesn’t hurt to have a positive attitude. Often emotionally rewarding, breast reconstruction helps women regain their self-image and quality of life.
Several plastic surgery techniques exist for breast surgery, including: flap techniques & repositioning of fat and skin, grafting to create areola, use of breast implants, and tissue expansion to cover implant. Procedures performed at La Peer for breast cancer patients include:
- Traditional breast reconstruction (with tissue expander)
- Breast reconstruction revision
- Lumpectomy & lumpectomies with needle localization
- Sentinel lymph node biopsy
The best technique for someone else may not necessarily be appropriate for your situation. After your initial consultation with a plastic surgeon from La Peer, you’ll have a better understanding of what procedure is right for your body.
Nipple Reconstruction Procedure
Reconstructing the areola is often performed following a breast reconstruction surgery and involves the sculpting of a new nipple.
Our surgeons perform several types of nipple reconstruction techniques. One way is to take a small flap of skin from the breast and form it into a nipple, or graft skin from a different part of the body. After fully healing, some women choose to have the areola tattooed a darker color to give off a more natural appearance.
While surgeons can recreate the look of the nipple, patients will unfortunately not have any feeling in the new nipple or areola. The nerves will not be connected with the actual breast.
