David J. Parks, M.D. is a skilled and extensively trained board-certified ophthalmologist at La Peer Health Systems.

Dr. Parks provides experience, medical expertise, and a personality that sets his patients at ease. He specializes in diseases and surgery of the retina and vitreous, ocular inflammatory diseases, and the ocular complications of AIDs, treating patients from around the country who seek out his medical expertise and friendly, approachable manner. Dr. Parks received top-notch education and training. As a result, he understands the delicacy and complexity of the eye as well as the importance of maintaining optimal eye health.

After earning his bachelor’s degree from the State University of New York at Binghamton, he graduated in 1988 with honors from the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, which is consistently ranked among the nation’s top five medical schools. Next, he received hands-on training at an internal medicine internship at University Hospital in Long Island. Then Dr. Parks completed an ophthalmology residency at Krieger Eye Institute at Sinai Hospital in Baltimore.

Determined to hone his skills, Dr. Parks took on a two-year fellowship in ocular immunology and uveitis at the National Eye Institute, a branch of the National Institute of Health. Through a government grant, he studied the ocular complications of the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) in both adults and children. Dr. Parks also served as a scientific investigator in a clinical trial using a new device for intraocular drug delivery for the treatment of cytomegalovirus, a retinal infection seen in many AIDS patients. Afterward, he co-authored an important scientific article deeming the device safe and effective for use. Dr. Parks has had other published works in scientific journals.

In 1994, Dr. Parks moved to Los Angeles where he accepted a fellowship in retinal and vitreous diseases at White Memorial Medical Center and, upon completion, was invited to join the full-time staff as director of the ocular immunology and uveitis service. He has since established a relationship with the Guam Seventh Day Adventist Clinic. As a result, he regularly cares for patients in Guam and Micronesia who would otherwise be unable to see a retinal specialist.

Because of his dedication to outstanding patient care, Dr. Parks has been recognized as a top doctor by Castle Connolly for 10 consecutive years. Only a select handful of physicians receive this prestigious award 10 years in a row, and Dr. Parks has been recognized for his exceptional work in macular degeneration and retinal disorders, in addition to his excellent bedside manner.

Dr. Parks lives in Los Angeles with his wife, Beth, and their twin boys. In his spare time, he is a dedicated runner, having completed ten marathons, and he also enjoys skiing and biking.
