Breast Lift

colorectal-surgery-la-peer-healthA woman’s breasts change over time and often suffer a loss of elasticity due pregnancy, breastfeeding, weight fluctuation, aging, gravity and heredity. Additionally, the areola can become enlarged over time. Also known as mastopexy surgery, a breast lift raises and firms sagging breasts. For patients at La Peer Health Systems, a breast lift can also resolve areola issues and provide a breast contour that is firm and shapely. If you are interested in learning more about breast lift surgery, don’t hesitate to schedule a consultation with the board-certified surgeons in our Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery department.

Is Breast Lift Surgery for You?

A breast lift may be a good option for you if:

  • You are physically healthy and maintain a stable weight
  • You do not smoke
  • You have realistic expectations
  • You are bothered by a feeling that your breasts sag or have lost shape and volume
  • Your breasts have a flatter, elongated shape or are pendulous
  • When unsupported, your nipples fall below the breast crease
  • Your nipples and areolas point downward
  • You have stretched skin and enlarged areolas
  • One breast is lower than the other

Our expertise allows us not only to equip you with information, but also to provide you with top-notch patient care so that you are confident in your treatment decision. We strive to ensure that you feel comfortable and relaxed every step of the way.

The Process

The breast lift surgical procedure usually takes one and a half to three hours. IV sedation or general anesthesia is administered to ensure you experience no discomfort during your procedure. After the incision is made, the underlying breast tissue is lifted and re-shaped to improve the breast contour and firmness. The incision type will depend on the patient’s breast size and/or shape, the size and position of her areolas, the degree of breast sagging, and elasticity and amount of extra skin. Next, the nipple and areola are repositioned to a more natural-looking position. If necessary, enlarged areolas are reduced at the perimeter. Any excess breast skin is removed to compensate for a loss of elasticity. Lastly, the skin is tightened and the incisions are closed with sutures, skin adhesives and surgical tape.

The Results

Patients enjoy immediate results after breast lift surgery. You’ll notice that some of your incision lines are concealed in the natural breast contour while others are visible. Incision lines are permanent, but over time these lines will fade significantly. While swelling may occur, this too will resolve in due time.

You can enjoy long-lasting results after breast lift surgery, however maintaining one’s weight and keeping a healthy lifestyle are crucial to retaining the beautiful results.

Recovery After Breast Lift Surgery

After surgery, bandages will be used to minimize movement of the breasts and stimulate the healing process. Once the bandages are removed, the patient will need to wear a special surgical bra for several weeks. During recovery, it’s essential that patients 1) get plenty of rest and 2) limit movement to help the body heal. Some patients experience minor pain, but in most cases discomfort can be easily treated with over-the-counter pain medication. It is critical that you follow the post-operative instructions as outlined by your surgeon in order to have a speedy, safe and complication-free recovery.
