Charitable and Humanitarian Causes of La Peer Surgery Center

La Peer Health Systems is proud to support humanitarian and charitable causes.

La Peer Medical Team Volunteering Abroad

A group of 85 volunteers, including five of La Peer Health Systems’ world-renowned doctors, traveled to Joyabaj, Guatemala on April 21, 2013. They participated in a mission to treat medical problems in one of Guatemala’s rural indigenous areas, in which they performed more than 100 surgeries for those who wouldn’t otherwise be able to afford it.

La Peer’s surgeons who participated in the mission were Gary Hoffman, MD, Colorectal and General Surgeon, Leo Treyzon, MD, MS, Gastroenterologist, and Babak Larian, MD, FACS, Otolaryngologist and Head and Neck Surgeon, along with expert anesthesiologists Darren Filsinger and Calvin Johnson.

The mission was organized by HELPS International, a nonprofit organization who recruits volunteers to work in impoverished areas of Central and Latin America. Many members of La Peer Health Systems travel with this mission annually, committed to helping underprivileged populations with medical needs.

Below is a sample of some of the groups that we actively work with.

Any support of the groups is greatly appreciated. Please click on the logo/photos below to be taken to the groups website.

Meet little Calvin. This was an emergency cesarean section, and baby and mom did great. Even though we could not communicate – because I don’t speak Mayan – the joy on the mom’s face said it all.

Life at hospital where we worked was just like Boy Scouts.
